Frame Relay Definition Continued.

This protocol flourishes because it is designed to compliment modern digital lines which are virtually noise free. With frame relay, data transmission usually originates through the private line of a customer, transfers to a shared network at the nearest frame relay switch, travels the majority of its distance through the shared frame relay network, and then transfers to the private line closest to the receiving customer. Frame relay is normally less expensive than point-to-point lines because many customers use and share the cost of the frame relay network, rather than each paying for a private line for the entire distance their data is transmitted. Private line cost is distance sensitive, so the longer the distance utilized via a shared network, the greater the cost savings experienced by the customer. Another factor which makes frame relay less expensive than point-to-point is that the nearest frame relay node is often much closer to the customer than the provider’s central office. This results in less private line distance being calculated into pricing. An additional benefit is that with frame relay it is often possible to connect to a provider which is hundreds of miles away for close to the same price as connecting to a local provider. For this reason, the number of providers which can be compared is significantly expanded. Frame relay is primarily used for the transmission of intermediate data between LANs, and between end points of a wide area network. The rapid increase in use of LANs and increased availability of fiber optic links has resulted in increased usage of frame relay. Frame relay is at times used for video conferencing, however, point-to-point lines are much better suited for the on-going high rate of bandwidth required by video conferencing. For companies which can afford point-to-point and absolutely require the best stability and most secure line possible, point-to-point continues to be considered a preferred option. Integrated T1 Now Includes Unlimited Free Long Distance Service

Too good to be true? Not any more. Some major integrated T1 telecom providers are now including unlimited free long distance service with their integrated T1 plans. With one integrated T1 circuit, your company can now actually have up to 16 voice lines, dynamic bandwidth allocation (full T1 bandwidth when voice lines are not in use), free unlimited local and long distance service to anywhere in the domestic US (even from metered locations), and up to 5000 minutes of free toll free service per month. All of this is provided for about the same cost, or slightly more than the average data (internet) T1 line. It should be noted that to prevent abuse, all providers which offer unlimited long distance actually place a cap on LD usage. Some, place that cap at 50,000 minutes per month, others at 100,000 minutes per month. If the cap is exceeded, then per minute charges apply to usage over the cap. Also, free unlimited LD plans are not provided to call centers or companies which utilize auto dialers. However, for virtually all small to medium sized companies, which are not call centers, 50,000 minutes of month is usually the equivalent of “unlimited”. Most small to medium sized companies never exceed 20,000 to 30,000 minutes of LD usage in a given month. For large companies, and companies which utilize call centers or auto dialers, there are excellent plans available that will provide unlimited long distance (with no cap) for less than a penny a minute, and unlimited toll free service for about 1.2 cents per minute.
